Nobody Taught Us How to Ask

A Guide for Men on Naming What We Feel and Reaching for the People We Love

by Matthew Gilbert, MA, LMFT

A lot of us were handed rules about what a man is supposed to be: work hard, push through, keep it to yourself. Usually those rules came from people doing the best they knew. But they often left us without words for what we feel, and without a way to reach for the people we love.

Drawing on two decades as a licensed marriage and family therapist, much of it spent with couples, Matthew offers a warm, practical guide to noticing what is going on inside, putting it into words, and asking for connection. Along the way you’ll meet three fictional men and the people they love. Each chapter closes with Try This Week, Process Questions, a Chapter Summary, and space for your own thoughts.

It’s written for men, and for the people who love them.

This book is for education, not therapy. It is a place to start, not a substitute for therapy or medical care, and reading it does not create a therapist–client relationship. If you are in crisis, call or text 988; in an emergency, call 911.
